A model of the dynamics of organizational communication

We propose a model of the dynamics of organizational communication. Our model specifies the mechanics by which communication impact is fed back to communication inputs and closes the gap between sender and receiver of messages. We draw on language critique, a branch of language philosophy, and derive joint linguistic actions of interlocutors to explain the emergence and adaptation of communication on the group level. The model is framed by Te'eni's cognitive-affective model of organizational communication

The emergence of information systems: a communication-based theory

An information system is more than just the information technology; it is the system that emerges from the complex interactions and relationships between the information technology and the organization. However, what impact information technology has on an organization and how organizational structures and organizational change influence information technology remains an open question. We propose a theory to explain how communication structures emerge and adapt to environmental changes. We operationalize the interplay of information technology and organization as language communities whose members use and develop domain-specific languages for communication. Our theory is anchored in the philosophy of language. In developing it as an emergent perspective, we argue that information systems are self-organizing and that control of this ability is disseminated throughout the system itself, to the members of the language community. Information technology influences the dynamics of this adaptation process as a fundamental constraint leading to perturbations for the information system. We demonstrate how this view is separated from the entanglement in practice perspective and show that this understanding has far-reaching consequences for developing, managing, and examining information systems

Communication in organizations: the heart of information systems

We propose a theory characterizing information systems (IS) as language communities which use and develop domain-specific languages for communication. Our theory is anchored in Language Critique, a branch of philosophy of language. In developing our theory, we draw on Systems Theory and Cybernetics as a theoretical framework. "Organization" of a system is directly related to communication of its sub-systems. "Big systems" are self-organizing and the control of this ability is disseminated throughout the system itself. Therefore, the influence on changes of the system from its outside is limited. Operations intended to change an organization are restricted to indirect approaches. The creation of domain-specific languages by the system itself leads to advantageous communication costs compared to colloquial communication at the price of set-up costs for language communities. Furthermore, we demonstrate how our theoretical constructs help to describe and predict the behavior of IS. Finally, we discuss implications of our theory for further research and IS in general. Deriving an IS-Theory from an Epistemological Position

Starting with a subjective epistemological position in combination with an objective ontological position we show that language is the limiting factor of scientific communication. Theoretically we draw on Language Critique, a branch of philosophy known as the Erlangen School to analyse communication and mutual understanding based on linguistic signs. We then argue that, if language limits communication in scientific discourse, this is true for any discourses in information systems processes. We propose a formalised theory of information systems anchored at Language Critique and show resulting consequences for research on information systems

Metainformationssysteme – Backbone der Anwendungssystemkopplung

Die Kopplung von Anwendungssystemen ist als komplexes Entwicklungsproblem im Sinne der Wirtschaftsinformatik zu begreifen. Der Beitrag ordnet aktuelle Standards und Technologien den Entwicklungsphasen der Informationssystementwicklung als Gestaltungsoptionen zu. Anhand von Terminologien und Nachrichtenstandards wird die Bedeutung von Metainformationssystemen gezeigt und es wird die Architektur der Terminologischen Klammer zur Kopplung von Anwendungssystemen eingeführt. Mittels der Kombination von Entwicklungsphasen und Abstraktionsebenen wird ein Rahmenmodell zur Kopplung von Anwendungssystemen eingeführt, welches der Strukturierung von Entwicklungsaufgaben und Beziehungen von Metainformationssystemen bei der Anwendungssystemkopplung dient. <br/

Konstruktion domänenspezifischer Modellierungstechniken für die Modellierung von Fachkonzepten

Ausgehend von einem konstruktionsorientierten Modellierungsverständnis und den Grundlagen des sprachkritischen Ansatzes zeigt der Beitrag welche wesentlichen Schritte der Konstruktion von Modellen erforderlich sind und geht auf Methoden zu deren Unterstützung ein. Diese Überlegungen führen zur Frage, wie Modellierungstechniken, die die konstruktionsorientierte Modellierung von Informationssystemen unterstützen sollen, aufgebaut sein müssen und gestaltet werden können. Der Beitrag zeigt, dass die Entwicklung von Modellierungstechniken selbst ebenfalls als Konstruktionsprozess im sprachkritischen Sinne zu begreifen ist und leitet aus dieser Erkenntnis ein methodologisches Vorgehen zur Entwicklung von Modellierungstechniken ab. Die Ausführungen werden anhand einer Fallstudie aus der Domäne des Data Warehousing illustriert. <br/

A framework for information warehouse development processes

Since the terms Data Warehouse and On-Line Analytical Processing were proposed by Inmon and Codd, Codd, Sally respectively the traditional ideas of creating information systems in support of management’s decision became interesting again in theory and practice. Today information warehousing is a strategic market for any data base systems vendor. Nevertheless the theoretical discussions of this topic go back to the early years of the 20th century as far as management science and accounting theory are concerned and to the late 50s and early 60s when focussing information systems aspects. Although today efficient technology is available to develop information systems for management’s purposes information warehouse projects are still very risky and most of them are not finished successfully. The main reason for this situation lies in the lack of suitable languages to develop the conceptual specification of information arehouses. Based on this drawback methods for the development of information warehouses cannot be specified clearly. This paper proposes a language for the required conceptual specification of information warehouses based on an thorough analysis of management and accounting approaches to this topic and shows how this language can be integrated in a two dimensional development framework for information warehouse development as fundamental component

Semantische Spezifikation Dispositiver Informationssysteme

Trotz verfügbarer Technologie und anerkannter Systemarchitektur existieren im Rahmen der Entwicklung von Dispositiven Informationssystemen ungelöste Probleme, die in der semantischen Modellierung zu sehen sind. Es mangelt an anerkannten Sprachen und Notationen, die die Voraussetzung zur Ausbildung anerkannter Entwicklungsmethoden darstellen. Zunächst wird der Problembereich motiviert und es wird in Kapitel 2 ein Ordnungsrahmen vorgeschlagen, der hilft, die Diskussion von Entwicklungsprozessen von Information Warehouses zu strukturieren. Kapitel 3 schlägt sowohl eine Sprache als auch geeignete Notationskonventionen zur Nutzung der Sprache im Rahmen der semantischen Modellierung Dispositiver Informationssysteme vor. Kapitel 4 bietet ein Anwendungsbeispiel.<br/

The MetaMIS approach for the specification of management views on business processes

The specification of management views on business processes is a main development task in the requirements specification of reporting systems for the management. Today the information warehouse is the accepted IT architecture for this purpose. The paper summarises the state of the research on the so called MetaMIS Approach. The methodological background is discussed and the modelling language comprising the conceptual and the representational language aspects is specified. Guidance rules complete the MetaMIS Modelling Technique. Examples show how the modelling technique works in enterprise environments. Some remarks on problem solving techniques as part of the MetaMIS Modelling Method are given. The appendix gives a detailed overview over the required linguistic operations for the construction of the modelling language.<br/

Die drei Dimensionen des Inhaltsaspektes von Führungsinformationssystemen

Führungsinformationssysteme werden als Instrumente der Unternehmensführung zur Überwindung der Zeitschere zwischen kürzer werdenden Reaktionszeiten und länger werdenden Informationsverarbeitungszeiten motiviert. Technische und inhaltliche Aspekte der Konzeption von Führungsinformationssystemen stellen den Ausgangspunkt der weiteren Überlegungen dar. Es wird gezeigt, daß die technischen Aspekte aus konzeptueller Sicht als weitestgehend gelöst betrachtet werden können. Als Rahmen zur inhaltlichen Konzeptionierung von Führungsinformationssystemen werden die drei Dimensionen Führungskräfte, Informationsobjekte sowie Steuerungs- und Regelungsaufgaben entwickelt. Die Verwendung der drei Dimensionen zur Informationsbedarfsermittlung wird anhand eines eigenen Vorgehensmodells verdeutlicht.<br/
